How to Track Lost Android Phone and Tablet

Posted in
Your Android gadgets are the most important things in your life. It contains all your important contacts and information. If you lose your equipment, you will be losing all those sweet memories with the photos and video. But there is some good news to android phone/tablet users, you can now easily find or at least know where your missing phone is with or without using android application.
Let’s first look at the way of finding your lost phone which doesn’t contain any app installed on it.

Use the IMEI Number

Every android phone carries a unique IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity Number). It will be printed at the back of your device. If you are unable to find the number, you have to launch your phone app and dial the number *#06#. This will give you the IMEI number of your phone. Store this number in a safe place so that it helps you in locating your phone when it is lost.
When you file a complaint, this number has to be added in the report. Your service provider uses this number to track your phone and tell you where it is. No matter if the person using the phone is using a different SIM card or has switched off the phone. Once the device is traced, you can request your service provider to block it from using.
This is one of the easy ways of locating your lost Android phone or tablet.

Plan B

Another way of tracking your lost Android gadget in no time is through Plan B app. This app does not require you to install any recovery software previously but still helps in finding your lost phone. All you need to do is log on to your Google play account. Lookout mobile security offers free software called Plan B. Download the software from play store to your phone. This will be possible only if your phone is within the Internet coverage area. Wait for some time and then send the keyword “locate” without the quotes through SMS to your phone. And a map showing where your equipment is will be sent to your Gmail account. This app is very much useful in situations where you don’t have IMEI number.
If you have installed and configured any of these below android software previously, there is good chance of finding it.
You can log on to Google Play store > My Android Apps, on your computer and check if you have installed any of the following apps previously.

Lookout Security and Antivirus

Lookout is the best android app for security and antivirus. So far, it has received millions of downloads. Just recall if you have installed this on your phone.
If you have activated the option “Missing Device” in this app, it is easy to find your device. If you have also enabled “Signal Flare” option, you can trace the last known location of your android device. This is helpful in case your phone battery is dead or tablet is switched off.
Now sign in Lookout to locate your device. The map shows the location of your phone. If you are at a short distance from the tablet, you can choose Scream option to make a loud noise to find it.

Android Device Manager

Google has recently released a new locator feature for Android gadgets called Android Device manager, which helps its users locate their lost or stolen phones and tablets. It functions in the same way as Lookout and Samsung’s “Find My Mobile”. Here’s how to use Android Device Manager.
Go to the Google Settings app, then select Android device manager. By default the locator feature is activated but to activate remove data wipe, select the box next to “Allow remote factory reset”, then select “activate”.
To use this feature, open the site http://sh.st/wQTtX and sign in to your Google account. You may be prompted for permission to allow Android Device Manager to use location data. Select the Accept tab to continue.
Now you will be provided with a map that shows the location of your device along with other details such as the name of the place, when it was last used and more. The location data doesn’t help you if your phone is misplaced somewhere in your home. Instead of making a call to your phone using other’s phone, you can call your phone directly from Android Device Manager. This will make your device to ring with high volume for 5 minutes, even if it’s in silent or vibrate mode.
One feature that is missing in Android Device Manager is remote locking, which can be useful in preventing a stranger from accessing your data, while you’re tracking its location.
Apart from these, there are other apps such as Android Lost, Where do My Droid and GadgetTrak that help you in finding your lost Android phone/Tablet.

9 Reasons to Root Your Android Device

Posted in

To root or not to root? That is the question. Rooting your Android device definitely pushes you up a level or two in your geekdom. It requires a certain level of commitment, at least a little savvy, and even a modicum of risk. So, why would you want to bother?

We've got nine good reasons for you.
What Is Rooting?
We talk about rooting plenty around here, but here's the high-level look for the few remaining uninitiated. Rooting means gaining root access to your device. When you take your phone out of the box, while there are plenty of settings you can tweak, you can only alter what the manufacturer allows you to. By gaining root access you can modify the device's software on the very deepest level. It takes a bit of hacking (some devices more than others), it voids your warranty, and there's a small chance that you could completely break your phone forever. But you know what? It's still totally worth it for all the goodies you get access to.
1. Apps Aplenty
If you've spent much time in Google Play, you know you're not exactly hard-up for good apps. But why settle for good when you can have great. Once you're rooted not only can you get more apps, but the apps you have access to can get way down deeper into your phone's brains. In some cases you'll be able to do things that carriers, manufacturers, and/or Google may not want you to do. Some will allow you to do things of questionable legality. For example,Network Spoofer uses your device to set up a fake wireless network. When your houseguests sign in, you can make ever image they see inverted, or all of the text fuzzy. It's a harmless prank, but of course it could (but shouldn't!) also be used for stealing passwords and other nefarious things.

Where do you find all these root-only gems? Amazingly enough, many of them are still in the Google Play app store. Google's much more relaxed about rooting than Apple is about jailbreaking. Some apps, like Tasker, work for factory-shipped devices as well, but get expanded superpowers when you root.
2. The Latest OS Updates
Dammit, why am I always three updates behind. This may be the most common complaint among Android users, less than half of whom have made it as far as Ice Cream Sandwich. Between the Google, the carriers, and the hardware manufacturers, there are a whole lot of shenanigans behind closed doors that determines when (or if) your phone gets an upgrade. Who has the patience?
Android's developer community, on the other hand, is a hardcore bunch. They're often able to get the new OS onto a phone months before the carrier releases the update, often along with a few bonus features. Once you're rooted, you just have to find the OS version you want (optimized for your specific device), and it's generally extremely easy to install the latest and greatest.
3. Ditching the Skin
Android enthusiasts rightly hate the software skins that hardware manufacturers use to brand their devices. They're often bulky, ugly, unwieldy, or just downright not as clean and functional as stock Android. They're also a big reason those OS updates take so long. You're almost always better off without.

So root! Once you do, you can download and install any number of custom-built ROMs (different versions of the Android firmware). Some of them are highly customized and tweaked to add features, and others are basically just stock Android. Cleaning off an ugly skin can be like a breath of fresh air.
4. Bloat Banishment

Android phones are plagued not only with OEM skins, but with a fistful of superflous apps that you don't want and will never use. Generally, they're just things to get you more entrenched in the carrier's ecosystem. The best part? You can't remove them. In Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) devices, you candisable those apps so you don't see them, but they're still there, taking up space. Once you've rooted your phone, you can useTitanium Backup to delete them once and forever. Just be careful you don't accidentally delete something that your phone actually needs, or you'll be sorry.
5. Speed/Battery Life Boosts

Phone starting to get laggy? Or maybe you're having trouble making it through the day on a single charge? Rooting allows you to install customized kernels (the software that enables the OS to talk to the hardware, basically) that are optimized differently. Some are made for low-power consumption, and some are built for speed. You can also use an app like Set CPU, which enables you to overclock or underclock your phone's processor, and set rules for usage. For example, you can set your processors to go into overdrive when you're playing a graphically intensive game, but have them draw the bare minimum power when the screen is off.
6. Extreme CustomizationAndroid is already the most customizable mobile OS out there, which is one of its big draws, but if you root your phone you can really go nuts. If you want a total change, you can download custom ROMs that look nothing like Android at all. Want your device to navigable entirely by gestures? No problem, just install GMD Gesture Control (see video). Prefer a sliding keyboard when you're in portait mode, but a tapping, predictive keyboard when you're in landscape.Keyboard Manager will automatically switch between your keyboards of choice whenever you rotate your phone. You can also add features like widgets in your notification bar, or can change the way certain features look or behave, like the lock screen, or notification bar. The sky's the limit.
7. Infinite Features
Beyond just customizing your phone's existing features, rooting helps you pile on all kinds of wonderful new weirdness. You'll love it.
Want to hook up your PlayStation controller to your phone for better gaming? You can. Want to set rules for callers to decide who can and can't call you when? Why not. Maybe your carrier has blocked certain apps, or an app isn't available for the country you live in? There are Market Enabler apps that trick your phone (and Google) into thinking it's on another carrier or in a far off land. Nervous about connecting to the public Wi-Fi? Wifi Protector will keep you safe from all kinds of ARP, DOS, and MITM attacks. Or, you could put the new Android 4.2 camera on your non-Jellybean phone. Accidentally deleted something you wish you hadn't? Undeletemight just save your bacon. The possibilities are virtually limitless.
8. A Free Wi-Fi Hotspot
9 Reasons to Root Your Android DeviceYou probably know that your phone can function as a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing you to get your laptop (or tablet, or whatever) online wherever your phone has a data connection The catch? Most wireless carriers charge you $10 a month or more for that privilege, on top of your regular data plan. With a rooted Android device, however, you can simply download Wireless Tether (yep, right from the Android Market), create your own mobile, encrypted Wi-Fi network, and your carrier will be none the wiser.
If you do tether multiple devices to your liberated phone, just make sure you don't go over your monthly cap. Data goes down a lot faster on a laptop.
9. Better Backup
There are apps out there that kiiiiinnnnda back up your phone, but generally it's pretty surface level stuff (contacts, pictures, music, etc.). Once rooted you can go way, way deeper. Grab an app called Titanium Backup. Not only can it back up all of your apps, but it can back up all of the information stored in those apps. So if you've been doing great in Temple Run but you want to wipe your phone and start fresh, you can use Titanium to back up and then restore the game, and you'll be right where you left off. It's a nice security blanket if you're going to be messing around deep in your phone's brain.               In spite of all these benefits, only you know whether rooting is right for you. For some people it's just not worth the time and effort. For others, it's a godsend that allows them to use their phones in a better way and for a longer time. If you decide to take the plunge, read up and make sure you follow instructions carefully. After that, go hog wild. It's your phone, after all.

New Android Phone? Check Out These 14 Essential Hints and tips

Posted in

If you’ve just purchased an Android phone, congratulations. By going Android, you’ve opted for raw functionality over simplicity, for customization over absolute user-friendliness. Android is a powerful platform, but only for those who take full advantage of all its tricks.
To help get you started, here’s a guide to tricking out your Android phone, whether you just bought a Samsung Galaxy S 4, HTC One or a budget Android handset from your local prepaid carrier:
androidwidgets

1. Get Some Widgets, Organize Your Home Screen

Widgets are an easy to way to put information and quick commands front-and-center on your phone. Here’s my most recent list of favorites, and here’s another list for good measure. On most newer phones, you can add widgets by going to the main app launcher, then swiping over to the widgets section. Some phones let you add widgets by holding your finger down on a blank part of the home screen.
Once you’ve got a solid collection, try to organize them in a logical way. For example, my main screen has just the weather, favorite apps and a fast way to reach my wife (more on that next). Then I have one screen for quick actions like note-taking, bookmarks and navigation shortcuts, one for news and information and another for phone settings.
contactwidget

2. Give Yourself a Spouse/Significant Other/BFF Button

I want to give special attention to Android’s built-in 1-by-1 Contact widget (or the “wife button,” as I call it), which serves as a command center for talking to that special someone in your life. Add it to your home screen, and with two taps you’ll be able to call, send a text message or write an e-mail. (Update: Some HTC phones, such as the HTC One, only include a 4-by-4 Contact widget. But there is another way: Press and hold down on your home screen, and you should see a drop-down list with “Widgets” as the default option. Change this to “Shortcuts,” then select “Person,” and select the contact you want to add.)

3. Set Up Google Play to Stream Your Music Collection

Just because your music collections is in iTunes doesn’t mean you can’t have your songs on Android. To bring music songs over from iTunes, you could use an app like DoubleTwist, but I prefer streaming my music from Google Play, freeing up space on the phone for more photos, videos and apps.
Just install the Music Manager software on your computer, and tell it where your music library is located. The software will match your collection to Google’s own library for free (similar to iTunes Match), and will upload any songs it can’t match. Then, you can use the Google Play Music app for Android to play your songs. The app can also download albums and playlists for offline listening.

3. Use the Google Play Website to Install Apps Remotely

The next time you find a good Android app suggestion on the web (here are 25 of them), don’t bother taking out your phone to download them. As long as you have visited Google Play on your phone before, and have connected your Google account, you can remotely install apps through the Google Play website. Just click the blue “Install” or “Buy” button on any app page, then select your device from the drop-down list. The app should appear on your phone shortly thereafter.

4. Set Your Apps to Update Automatically

Keeping your apps up to date on other platforms can be a hassle, but on Android, you can set apps to update automatically. Just go to the Google Play app, hit your menu button, and go to Settings, then check the box for “Auto-update apps.” You may also want to check the “Update over Wi-Fi only” box to avoid going over your cellular data cap. Keep in mind that if an app changes its privacy permissions, you’ll still have to update it manually.

5. Get a Gesture Keyboard

swype
On Android, you are not bound to the software keyboard that comes with your phone. If you aren’t using a gesture keyboard, like Swype or SwiftKey Flow, you’re missing out.

You’ve got a few options for gesture typing on Android. It’s possible that your phone may have a gesture keyboard included, but the quality of these versions can vary. Your best options are to buy SwiftKey ($4, or free trial) and enable Flow after installation, or buy Swype ($1, or free trial). Both apps will walk you through the setup process when you open them for the first time.

6. Set Up Google Now

googlenowGoogle Now is a virtual assistant built into newer Android phones. It attempts to provide information automatically based on where your are, what you search for and other information. For example, if you’re at a train station, it will alert you to when the next train arrives. And once it figures out where you work and live (based on the phone’s location), it can warn you about traffic on your commute. It can also hook into Gmail to provide information on flights, track inbound packages and remind you of upcoming events.
To enable Google Now, open up the Google Search app and go into settings. Flip on the switch for “Google Now” to on. You can also tap the the Google Now line in settings for more options, allowing you to fine-tune the types of information that show up.
chromeforandroid

7. Download Chrome (If You Don’t Have It)

Even though Chrome is technically the default browser for Android, some phone makers have deluded themselves into thinking their own browsers are better. Don’t believe it. Chrome is fast and simple, and if you use Chrome on your computer, the mobile app will automatically keep your bookmarks in sync.
If your phone doesn’t come with Chrome, pick it up from the Google Play store. Occasionally, you’ll see a prompt to choose which browser to use (for instance, when opening a link through Twitter). Whenver this happens, select Chrome and hit “Always,” and you’ll never have to deal with an inferior browser again.

8. Get Text Messages on Your Computer

On Android, several third-party apps will allow you to read and respond to text messages from your computer or tablet, using your existing phone number. I rounded up a few of them in an older post, but my favorite is MightyText. Just install the app on your phone, then follow the instructions on MightyText’s website to access your text messages on your desktop browser or your tablet.

9. Get Comfortable with “Share”

sharebutton
In certain apps, you might notice an icon resembling a “V” or a “<” character, sometimes with arrows pointing outward. This is the Share button, and it’s designed to let any two apps on your phone communicate with each other.
For instance, the Share button will let send interesting web links directly to your social networking app of choice. If you’ve written something in text editor, the Share button will let you send those notes by e-mail or save them to Dropbox. If you have a read-it-later app like Pocket, the Share button lets you save articles without ever leaving the app you’re in. Get comfortable with the Share button and you’ll save yourself lots of time.

10. Download Maps for Offline Use

mapdownloadInternet connections fail. Mobile networks get congested. But you don’t want that to happen when you’re relying on GPS navigation for directions. Go into Maps on your phone, hit the menu button, and select “Make available offline.” Pinch or zoom to select the map area you want to download, then press “Done.” You should store a map for where you live, and store some more before you travel. Even if you don’t have a data connection, you’ll be able to see your GPS location marker in Google Maps, so this trick is especially helpful for navigating a foreign country without a data plan.

11. Connect to a PC for Fast Photo Transfers

filetransferandroid
One nice thing about Android is that you’re not locked into a program like iTunes for moving files on and off the phone. On the downside, transferring photos or other files requires just a little more know-how.
After plugging your phone into a PC’s USB port, look for it in your computer’s file browser. You’ll likely see a folder called “Internal Storage.” Click on that, then look for the folder called “DCIM.” You’ll find all your photos in here, possibly in another folder called “Camera” or something similar. Mac users, note that you’ll need extra Android File Transfer software to make this work.
Alternatively, when you plug in the phone, look for a notification on your phone that says you’re connected by USB. Tap on this notification, and select the option to connect as Camera (or PTP). This is a good option for Mac users who just want to get to their photos, rather than the entire Android file system.

12. Back Up Photos Automatically

Android offers a few ways to automatically save your photos online, ensuring that you’ll still have a copy even if you lose your phone. The easiest way is through Google+ (don’t worry, it won’t share your photos unless you decide to do so later): Open the app, go into Settings, then tap “Instant Upload.” Flip the switch at the top of the screen, then adjust the settings below. Setting the storage size to Standard will allow unlimited uploads.  You may also want to only allow uploads while connected to Wi-Fi, and only when the phone is plugged in.
If you’d rather not use Google+, Dropbox and SugarSync can automatically back up your photos as well, but with limited storage.

googleplusbackups13. Get an App for Remote Find and Wipe

Unfortunately, Android doesn’t include a “find my phone” feature out of the box. To keep your phone secure in case it gets lost or stolen, you’ll need to download a third-party app.
Android Lost isn’t pretty, but it’s free, and offers lots of remote control options for your phone. For instance, you can display a message asking whomever’s got your phone to bring it back, or set a lock screen code. Another option is Cerberus. It’s a cleaner app and lets you locate your phone on a map, but it carries a one-time fee after a one-week trial period.

14. Take Advantage of Refunds

googleplayrefundAny time you pay for an Android app, you have 15 minutes to try it out and get your money back if you’re not satisfied. That’s not a lot of time, but it’s enough to poke around the app and make sure it suits your needs. Being able to get a refund is especially useful if you’re looking for something specific, and the app’s description doesn’t tell you exactly what you need to know. It’s also a lifesaver if the app doesn’t work with your phone for any reason.
To get the refund, just go back to the app’s page in Google Play. As long as you bought the app within 15 minutes, you’ll see a “refund” button. The app will uninstall, and you’ll get your money back.
